How is bouldering different from climbing?

Bouldering and climbing are both fundamentally climbing as both require use of arms and legs to propel you forward on a vertical plane.

Where bouldering differs from sports climbing or roped climbing is that bouldering doesn’t secure you with a rope and is typically limited to a height of around 4 meters, considered fairly safe for you to be able to jump down to the base after completing a climb.

Roped climbing gives the climber a sense of security as they know their fall will be caught by the belayer or an auto-belay system and in turn gives the confidence to pursue climbing quickly by feeling secure.

Roped climbing to higher heights also allows building of endurance and different techniques to sustain oneself on a longer duration of a climb.

Bouldering on the other hand is exciting and can be done individually without a partner as there is no belayer. But at the same time, bouldering can seem daunting to those who are climbing for the first time.

In the end, both forms of climbing are needed for a full repertoire of a climber. It is like being able to do short sprints on one day and run a long distance race on another.
